Coverage November 2007
November 25, 2007 – USA Today – “He propels his pupils to appreciate science”
Michael Lampert tells his microelectronics class he's changing the lesson plan. "I just happen to have a little liquid nitrogen with me," the West Salem High School teacher says with a grin. For this class, he'll demonstrate how LEDs (light-emitting diodes) change color in extreme cold and how a small ceramic disk becomes a superconductor when immersed in the liquid.
November 25, 2007 – Los Angeles Times – “L.A. educator is among the state's best”
Lewis Chappelear is chosen as a Teacher of the Year for his work in starting an engineering program at Monroe High in North Hills. For someone who never thought of becoming a teacher, Lewis Chappelear hasn't done all that badly. Not too badly at all. Eight years ago, Chappelear was a burnt-out, unsatisfied restaurant owner in Toronto in search of a change. On Monday, he will be named a California Teacher of the Year with four others and represent California in a national top-teacher competition.
November 24, 2007 – San Francisco Chronicle – “A man with innovation on his mind”
John Kao is as close to a Renaissance man as you'll find in early 21st century San Francisco…. Now he has written a book, Innovation Nation: How America Is Losing Its Innovation Edge, Why It Matters and What We Can Do to Get It Back (Free Press). In it, Kao proposes a kind of Marshall Plan for the United States to stop its fall from prominence in the increasingly competitive, globalized world of science and technology. The timing of the book is not coincidental. This month marks the start of the last leg of the presidential campaign. "Innovation has to be put on the agenda," says Kao. "The book was deliberately timed to give the ideas in it time to percolate."
